Introduction of the guest speaker

Johanna Kaitsalmi, PhD: Seeking a child's perspective changes the adult

This year's guest speaker will be Johanna Kaitsalme, PhD in Health Sciences, who will guide us through her work and research on child-centredness and encounter. Johanna says this about herself:

My interest in the importance of encounters has certainly always existed, but it became the main topic during my doctoral research. I was studying the interactions between nurses and young children with special needs in a paediatric neurology department, and I learned a lot of things that are relevant to all interactions.

Prior to my doctoral studies, I completed a Master's degree in Health Sciences with a major in Nursing (Health Sciences Teacher Education) and before that a Master's degree in Nursing (Paediatric Nursing). My longest career has been as a nurse in the paediatric neurology department of the Kymenlaakso Central Hospital. Since then, I have done a wide range of teaching, training and encounter work at universities, universities of applied sciences and numerous training events. I am also involved in many networks such as the Child Rights Communication Network, the Expert Network for the Inclusion of Young Children and the Play Day Network. My most important achievement is that I continue to be an active member of the Nurses of Paediatric Neurology Associationin 2011.
